My husband might be getting a job in Hickory. While we have gotten some good feedback on Hickory as far as providing good schools, family activities, kids classes and sports (I.e., Taekwondo, volleyball, soccer that kind of stuff), local restaurants and amenities, good housing... The other town that has popped up looking like it might have more to offer is Mooresville.
How is the reverse commute from Mooresville to Hickory. According to google maps it says approx. 55-1 hour for that commute; however, after searching on this awesome site I have found people saying 40 minutes. I think I'm leaning towards Mooresville vs. Hickory and want to get a better real estimate in the commute for my husband.
Any advice you have on what Mooresville offers in regards to my first paragraph would be great too!
If the job is located along the I-40/US 321 corridor then the commute should be in the 40-45 minute range. The Mooresville/Lake Norman area offers quite a bit . IMO your family would enjoy living there if your Husband doesn't mind the commute.
When we moved here about 10 years ago, my boss gave me an area in which we should choose to live and report to work. The rectangular area went from Hickory to Statesville to Mooresville to Lincolnton.
After driving around these areas extensively, checking all the resources we could find, and getting recommendations from associates, we choose to live out Hwy 150 west of I-77 (but still in the Mooresville zip code).
It is the best "all-around" area for shopping, business, access to Charlotte and Meck county attractions, etc. AND we benefitted from the Iredell Statesville school system.
I won't knock these other towns listed, but I will say the decision to live where we did was a "no-brainer" for our family.
Don't fret over the commute to Hickory. It is about 45-50 minutes, but traffic is always favorable (no backup's). You can even plot backroads to get up there (through Old Mountain Rd, Bandys, etc.), but they don't really save any time. Just a change of scenery.
Good luck with your choice.
