My wife and I are able to get away for an overnight stay in Charlotte (weeknight, not weekend as my headline says). We are interested in suggestions for where to stay and what to do. What hotels would you recommend? We've never stayed in a hotel in the Charlotte area so it's new territory of course.

With young children (both under 6) most of our travels are kid oriented. For example, a play or concert is a possibility. Visiting a greenway for walking or biking perhaps. Open to all kinds of ideas.

Thank you in advance.

I'd recommend you stay in Uptown (downtown in most cities). Lots to do there...AAA baseball, Bechtler Museum of Art, Mint Museum Uptown, lots of restaurants and bars, maybe something happening at Time Warner Arena or The Blumenthal Center for Performing Arts, Romare Bearden Park, Sugar Creek Greenway. Outside of Uptown...Freedom Park, Whitewater Center, PNC Music Pavillon.

And don't forget Discovery Place - perfect for your age kids. I confirm Romare Beardon Park as well - nice little musical garden as well as fountains contained therein. There are some family friendly restaurants uptown - Mellow Mushroom pizza, Brix Pizza, Merts, Vapiano, and more

I'm under the impression (mistaken perhaps) that this trip is without children. Perhaps the OP could clarify.

You're right, maybe I misunderstood - I guess since a play was mentioned it must be no kids. In that case, I might recommend different restaurants.
