Ok here's a 3rd time:

If you need to cross an interstate do you just walk across it or take an overpass? I take the overpass. Why? Well, i'm not 100% sure that i'll get hit by a car crossing the interstate but the chances of me being injured or killed crossing the interstate are much higher if I just walk across rather than taking an overpass. Forcing diversity would be equivalent to making a crosswalk that crosses the interstate.

Is that a better picture for ya?

Maybe it's me but Charlotte doesn't feel like a city that's 35.2% black. There are parts of town where you really don't see a lot of black people at all.

When I couldn't afford a car and had to walk, bike, and take transit everywhere, I crossed and straddled a few interstates in my day.

It was the only way to see my then-fiance some days, and it was romantic as F--K (is what I told myself).

Yeah the internet seems like the ideal place to express their outdated opinions and misguided logic. No point in reasoning with it. Kind of surprised to see such ignorance on the Charlotte forum. Usually it's reserved for the Current Events section.

It's not that I won't talk to anyone that isn't like me but I'm more drawn to live and hang out with similar people like myself. I think people need to instead pay attention in cleaning up the bad areas, enforce rules/cutting down on crime etc. Stop dragging people into areas they wouldn't otherwise choose voluntarily. Let the white people have their areas and leave us non white people alone.
Have to agree with you 100 per cent. Think the govt pushed for this with busing, which we learned after 20 plus some years didnt work,so then the push for mixing it up in neighborhoods. Cultures for decades separated themselves and settled in certain areas of every city. They wanted like kind as friends, mates, to share their history, language, music, food and cultural things. They did attend schools with the rest of the area but went home to the familiar. Not one thing wrong with that thinking. We still have remnants of areas with their Polish, greek, lithuanian, hungarian neighborhoods. Blacks are able to move in pretty much anywhere and often do. We have also a black area still thriving in one part of our city with their homes, manicured lawns and folks just enjoying their lives. Theres pride in their area and have pretty good access to all things the city offers.

The OP never said anything about "forcing" diversity.

And considering you are the one offended by the word "diversity", your cute little graphic is quite ironic!

You might say it's the MOST natural thing to do, since this town literally raised us, and now we want to come back and invest in it. That's what every small town famously wants, isn't it?
This is a very scary thread.

BUT, I really appreciate what you're getting at. I think if you want to invest in bringing diversity to Matthews you could get involved in some things that attract people of all ethnic backgrounds, such as:

- a music venue, or outdoor concerts that offer a variety of musical acts, such as Latin, Hip Hop, Bollywood, K-Pop, etc

- an international festival that offers food and music from many cultures

- a cultural center that offers a place for folks of many backgrounds to explore different cultures

- anything that celebrates the diversity that is already in Matthews, so that folks who are looking for a place to live will see Matthews as a welcoming place.

FTR, I live in Chapel Hill, but my mother-in-law lives in Charlotte on the Matthews side of things. My (white) spouse grew up during busing and was bused from the Myers Park area (MIL has since moved to the Olde Providence area) to West Charlotte (the black high school, for folks who don't know). Loved it and had some of the best teachers (PhDs). Busing was one of the best things that ever happened in my book and I came up during desegregation, too.
