Up in Vermont (brrrr) we had a weekly group of folkies who met at a local restaurant/pub to play tunes together. Everyone took turns leading, and everyone jumped in--oldtime, folk, original, whatever struck our fancy. On any particular night, we might have three or four guitars, a banjo, a mandolin, a cello, a fiddle, a dobro, and a few happy souls who just came to sing. There were usually up to a dozen of us, sometimes fewer, sometimes more.
We met on Monday nights--a slow restaurant night--pushed a couple of tables together. Some ordered meals, some just drinks. The establishment kicked in a few $20 gift cards, and a free meal for the night's organizer. It was a win for everybody: the musicians got a chance to meet up with creatures of their own kind, the patrons got to hear some enthusiastic chestnuts, and the restaurant/pub filled some tables that would have otherwise gone empty on a slow night.
I'd like to do something like this in Charlotte. New in town, I have no idea where to find a likely venue, or how to get the word out to acoustic musicians.
So, any advice appreciated. And if something like this already exists in the area, please point me at it. If not, and if you'd like to be a part of it, lemme know.
