Default Safe, convenient hotels near UNCC? Safe places to live for single female with no car?

I'm moving to Charlotte from Buffalo NY, hope to stay a week in Feb to find a place to live for March 1st. I won't have a car--have a drivers license but don't like driving, have never owned a car! I'm used to taking buses & other public transportation (also walking & biking) even in the Cold, Snowy winters here & I've already checked out Charlotte public transportation when I was here in January. (I'm a single female over 45, no kids, financially secure enough not to need a job right away, will be able to work part-time later to start later on.)

Planning to stay a week or so in February to search for a place to live for around March 1st - 15th (prefer not to rent my own apt right away, planning to try to share with a mature, nonsmoking female as roommates in a shared condo or apt situation.)

During my search for a place to live, hope to stay near UNCC, near major bus routes to go to appts near UNCC, Southpark Mall area & other "safe" areas (how is it near Park Rd Shopping Center?)

Questions: 1) Safe, convenient, economical hotels to stay near UNCC?
(Remember: WON'T HAVE A CAR!!) Anyone stayed at Intown Suites near N Tryon St?
2) Safe, convenient areas to live? (must be near MAJOR bus
routes & near shopping, parks, tennis courts.)

Thanks!

I can't offer too many suggestions to help you other than to say, I would not stay at the Intown Suites, or any other place, on N. Tryon.

OK, thanks for responding-- but could you tell me why you would steer me away from these locations? bad experience with those particular hotels? high crime area?
