It seems that what's on the rise in Charlotte is property crimes-- burglaries and breakins, theft. Is this right?
When I lived there I never really felt at risk for violent crime, I just used common sense and feel like I was not a likely target. I felt like it was something you can contol to an extent by using good judgement, of course, not in every case...random stuff does happen.
But I was always much more worried about breakins and theft. Overall I felt ok in the area I lived in-- University, twice.

Yes, break-ins are still going up. I hear about them all the time sadly.

Yes, I believe that is correct and the stats are out there - maybe someone will post if I don't find a link.
In addition, I have heard on national news that this is a nation-wide trend. There is even speculation that such online sales sites as ebay have given thieves an easy outlet for selling stolen items, making home break-ins a more attractive enterprise for the criminal amongst us.

I agree. I don't think violent crime is a huge issue in Charlotte but property theft seems to be rising. I lived in Cotswold and Dilworth and my townhouse was broken into once and my car twice within 3 years. These were "safe" areas. I guess I was one of the statistics!! Just be careful and get alarms or a dog.

My husband and I are moving to Charlotte this Spring and have found the same info. I look at the Char-Meck Police Dept website every month and it looks like all the crimes are auto theft, breaking into cars, stealing cars etc...
