A good friend of mine relocated to Columbia and we are trying to find a spot to meet -- approximately half-way between Union County and Columbia. It would be great if we could find a charming small town to explore and have a nice lunch. Any ideas? If no such towns exist, any place really where we can have a nice lunch. Thanks.

Not exactly halfway, but Charley's Cafe in downtown Lancaster might be a good option. Or Summit Food and Spirits in Chester.

Check out Florence, SC. Lots of hotel-no-tels and bistros.

Florence is waaaaay out of the way. And hotel-no-tels? The OP didn't indicate they were looking to have an affair, just lunch.

historic downtown Camden should have something, there are some charming little towns to pass through on the way but probably won't find anything there. I enjoy driving the backroads in that area and there are some nice nature places I can recommend if you're looking for a hike.

Thanks everyone. No hotel-no-tells. LOL. No affair. Just lunch with a friend I haven't seen in a while.

There isn't a lot town wise between the two. I'd say that Great Falls is your best bet for a meeting place.

Check out the Flopeye Diner. (A lot of locals refer to part of the area as Flopeye)

A great place to explore and walk along a pristine part of the Catawba River is the Landsford Canal state park.

Ridgeway is a pretty quaint little town as well. 3 miles of I-77 about 30 miles north of Columbia.

At one time, before they finished I-77 to Columbia in the early 1980s and all traffic had to go through Ridgeway, it was also the location of a notorious speed trap.

In fact they had a booth on the side of the road where you could pay the fine and then go about your way. If you didn't have the cash, then you got put in the slammer until someone could show up to pay the fine.

Unfortunately Ridgeway isn't anywhere close to 1/2 way between the two.
