We will be moving to South Charlotte - right near the Siskey YMCA - next month, and have a very athletic 11 year old who will be looking to start sports pretty quickly. I see the Y has a bunch of sports. What I wanted to know is, is that where kids this age play, or are there other leagues to consider? Specifically, he loves soccer and basketball, and we would also like to find a track & field/running organization. These sorts of things are run through our town rec department where we're moving from, but because Charlotte is SO much bigger than the little town we're leaving, I figured reaching out to the locals would get me the best info vs Googling. Thanks.

The y is a great starting place for all sports including soccer and basketball. Our boys have been in the y for a few years and we have enjoyed it. If you want a slightly more competitive environment you could try Charlotte Soccer Academy for soccer and Carolina Courts for basketball.

Personally the Y is fine for getting a taste of a sport but not really for competitive kids. We have good luck with South Charlotte Rec and SouthPark Youth Asso for softball and basketball for our daughter. MARA (Matthews Athletics Rec Asso) is in the same city-wide league as SouthPark and South Charlotte for most youth sports.

Matthews Athletic & Recreation Association

Soccer is a whole other ball game with their clubs.

My son and many friends of ours have played with South Charlotte Rec (baseball and basketball) and had a good experience.

Edit: MARA is also very good, we haven't played there personally, but I know a lot of people whose kids play there and they like it. A couple of other organizations a little further would be Park Sharon and Weddington.

Basketball is a little tricky because at age 11, most of the highly skilled players have already moved up to "tournament" or AAU teams. I know a few kids playing basketball in Dynamic.

For soccer, CSA (Charlotte Soccer Academy) seems to be really popular (you will see the car magnets on a lot of cars driving around town). My daughter is in her first season there and she is having a great time.

Anyway, going with one of the above mentioned rec leagues is probably a good start. If your child is ready for higher competition, there will be other options for sure.
