I've always wanted to take ice skating lessons, but until now, I've never lived near a rink.

From my research, I've found two rinks that offer lessons: Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail and the Pineville Ice House. Does anyone have any experience with either of these places?

The Pineville rink is closer to me, but it looks like the Indian Trail rink is nicer and has a bigger program. Thoughts anyone?

Lesson 1: tie the skates on tight.

Ice skating is fun, but has a painful learning curve. You really don't need lessons as much as you need to trust your feet. Just slide. And don't fall on your tailbone. Ouch!

I'm being serious. It is a very strange feeling, your feet moving without taking steps. It's not like sliding across a wood floor in your socks, where you have to lean back. Trust your balance and let the skates glide. Stay over the top of them until you pick up speed, then adjust accordingly. Smooth, fluid motions make the difference.

Take this with a grain of salt. I had skates tied to my feet and I was left for 2 hours. I figured it out. My snowboarding lesson, or complete lack thereof, was just as painful. I figured that out, too. That hurt much worse.
