I am looking to buy a high quality pure leather sofa set at a reasonable cost. I want to avoid places like Ashleys, Rooms to Go and I also would like to avoid the high end boutiques. Any recommended furniture stores? Is it worth driving to Hickory?
Ethan Allen, Black Lion, Good's, Haverty's, Thomasville Furniture, Tyndall - they are a step above Ashley and RTG, but are more reasonable than some of the boutiques. Even if you don't purchase if you ask a bunch of questions you'll learn a bit about what makes them better as well as picking up some of BS the sales people will push your way. I think you will see appreciable differences in quality up to spending over 2k, but once over that threshold will not see much of a difference. I could be wrong though.
Let me know what you go with - I'm shopping all the time for a good deal.
I had great luck with Haverty's - the styles may be a bit traditional, so you will need to see if they have what you want. The in store experience and the delivery is really good - and the prices are reasonable. If your budget permits, I think Crate and Barrel is another great choice - but a lot more money.
There are some great shops in Pineville, but look to spend well over 2K for a quality set. We paid about that 10 years ago for just a sofa and arm chair, but it's worth the price for something you'll have forever. When I was shopping for a coffee table in Pineville I saw some beautiful, quality sofa sets at about 3 - 4K.
Try this one out: The Assistance League on S. Tryon. It acquires furniture, clothing, etc. from estate sale donations. My wife is addicted to it. It is a charity, but unlike the other two (or three) names in the industry, it sells a lot of high-end stuff at giveaways prices from high-end estates. If previously-owned stuff freaks you out, this place is not for you. If you enjoy shopping and looking for incredibly high quality, check it out. 3405 S Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28217 (704) 525-5228
Laughlin Furniture - Shelby, NC - Laughlin in Shelby - this is supposed to be an outlet & the building looks like an old-fashioned outlet. Search their website for leather & a lot of pictures pop up.
My husband bought leather couches from them when we had been dating a year. He still has them and they are in great condition 18 years later. They don't get used all the time now (they were in the basement of our VA house and they are on the 3rd floor of our NC house) but they were for the first 11 years or so.
There's a furniture warehouse like store somewhere in the south; can't remember the name at the moment. They have good selection, but you have to get your own delivery. Most of the material there are from brand names that you'd see at some of these boutique stores anyway.
