I am considering moving from the Hudson Valley NY to Charlotte.

I have the gorgeous Hudson River and Mountains to scramble, both within 30 minutes of me.

Is there any water near?

Is there a lot of nice outdoor stuff to enjoy in Charlotte or is it mostly stores and plazas and urban?

How close are the beaches?

Lake Norman is very close. 30 minutes from Charlotte. Beaches are around 3.5 to 4 hours. Mountains are 1.5 to 2 hours away.

Hey KBBBO,

How about you compile All of your questions about the area into one post and we can take them all at one time? This one is low hanging fruit and only a map click away from your finger tips. I'd love to be able to work in some examples of art and culture and sophistication themes across multiple answers, but with multiple threads it makes the cohesiveness difficult to appreciate.

I will tell you one thing that is for sure: If you move here, everyone will really really really appreciate it if you constantly tell them about how things were in Hudson Valley NY and how much better or worse it was. There is literally nothing in my life more exciting than hearing about the hometowns of transplants. Would love to hear about those gorgeous mountains, water and beaches of NY.

In addition to Lake Norman, there also Lake Wylie just south of Charlotte. Other large lake (Tillery and Badin) about an hour east. Others about an hour+ to the northwest. Charlotte is not "very urban" except for a small core. Its very suburban, with lots of trees, parks and greenways. There is also the National Whitewater Center, Crowders Mountain and Kings' Mountain Parks nearby, South Mountain State Park about an hour away. Lots of outdoor recreational opportunities.

But as Esse said, if its so great where you are, why move?

The lakes around Charlotte are nice, but there is disappointingly little public access and virtually no beaches or hiking trails. Just a few parks that abut the water. If you have a boat, all is good though. Best place to go for a nature outing is the mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but it's a long day trip. Morrow Mountain State Park about 1 hour to the east is very nice too.
The closest beaches are about 3 hours away. The nicer ones IMO are 3.5-4 hours away.

Seriously. Please don't move unless you have visited...and not just once....Visit a couple of times to see if you think you will fit in and adapt to the way of life in Charlotte.

I stop to take a break, get a bite, use the bathroom. And not get a ticket in a speed trap.
