I am a Geographic Science student at UNC-Charlotte and am currently working on my final project for my GIS (Geographic Information Systems) class. We have been given the task of creating a "story map" essentially a map that conveys raw data as simplified data that can be used to inform the general public about otherwise boring or complicated topics. What I am considering for my map is to show the areas in the Charlotte region where most of the public transit commuters, as well as automobile commuters, are coming from, I will then analyze data from these areas to help create a map showing the commuting habits here in Charlotte, and where the transit friendly areas are and where improvements need to be made. To help me out, I ask that you provide me with some basic information. NOTE: You do not have to answer all questions! Anything helps.
1. Do you use public transportation? If not, would you consider it if accessibility your area were different?
2. What form of transit do you use? Bus, Express Bus, Light Rail, Streetcar, Vanpool/Carpool, or Automobile.
3. Do you walk to transit directly from your home, or do you utilize the Park and Ride lots provided by CATS?
4. Where do you specifically live? (Obviously you may not want to provide a specific address, just a neighborhood or landmark withing 1/2 mile or your residence will suffice).
5. Where do you work? (Once again, if you do not want to be specific, give a general area or building.)
6. How far, assuming facilities like sidewalks and crosswalks are available, would you walk/bike to a bus stop, or train stop? (Example, 1/4 mile to bus, 1/2 mile to train)
7. What improvements do you think could be done to make transit a more appealing to you in your area? Elaborate as much as you need, UNCC has major influence in the region and students in my department are often asked to attend forums and provide observations, I could always put in a word or two.
I'm not asking for too much personal information, this is a simple map and is designed to show that I understand the map rendering and data collection system, no names or usernames will be used on this map and it will be only accessible to those involved in assessing it. Thank you in advance!

The closest light rail station to me is in Pineville and it stops well short of my work. By well short I mean at least 5 miles away. The system would have to be much more developed than it currently is.

2. Auto
3. n/a
4. 28226
5. 50% Uptown, 15% Southpark, 35% Westinghouse
6. Walk - 1/2 mile, Bike - only for exercise/leisure
7. (a) Additional and longer turn lanes. People turning blocking traffic flow cause a lot of the congestion around here. (b) Don't pave any neighborhood roads until regional transportation goals are met. My street that serves 50 cars per day should be gravel before they say their isn't funding for additional rail/I-77. (c) Stop building bike lines outside of inner ring suburbs. In my area they are used 99.9% leisure and those dollars could be better invested such as accelerating the greenway projects which would provide a much better/safer place for biking (plus they benefit walkers, joggers and flood control).

From my limited experience with the Light Rail, I'd say that they've done a good job so far. However, since it still is rather new in areas, keeping the facilities safe would be the #1 priority.
