My wife and I have been to the lake norman area several times looking to relocate after retirement. We have seen homes and lots in Harbor Watch, Sailview, and Windemere among many more and liked these. Any input from people living in those communities of likes and dislikes for each? Water problems, or sewer issues? Community attitudes in general? Any input is appreciated, thank you all.

Don't buy from a cheap Charlotte developer with MDF Moldings and partial board, half overlay cabinets. Most of the developers build with these cheap materials here.

If you can find one, a builder that builds stand alone homes and not in a cookie cutter development. I'm not sure they exist anymore in the Charlotte area. If you go to a developer and they already have named floor plans and you get to pick from a few of their select options, it will be cheap stuff. It will be built quick though. They throw these houses up quick around here, but cheap.

If you decide that you want to go with an independent builder I would suggest that you check with the zoning departments in towns near where you want to build. If you don't find what you want, then start checking in towns that are near to rural areas like Lincolnton or Kings Mountain. If you find someone whose work you like who doesn't work where you want to build they may be able to give you a recommendation of someone who does work there. This would be time consuming & if you decide to go this route, I'd suggest that you find a rental.
