I'm coming in from Raleigh in a few weeks for a Hornets game at TWC Arena on a Saturday night.
I found a good deal for the Charlotte Center City Hotel (near Marshall Park in 2nd Ward), I realize the hotel has some flaws but I really just need a clean/safe room to sleep in.
Post game I would like to stop and have a couple beers somewhere, and since it seems like all bars/places to eat are near the arena, that would be the place to do it.
I'm just concerned about the safety of walking back to the hotel afterwards. I can see it isn't far but I've read elsewhere Marshall Park is to be avoided at night and the area is a bit deserted. Is this walk safe enough or should I look in to another (albeit more expensive) hotel?
If you walk East Trade you go past the Federal Reserve, City Hall, County office building and Police Department and Jail. So many, many surveillance cameras. Likely few pedestrians.
Or walk along Caldwell past the Hyatt hotel to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and then turn left to walk past First Baptist Church and a hotel. Both these routes miss Marshall Park.
You shouldn't have any trouble. You might see the occasional drunk or panhandler, but there is not much else to be concerned about.
This, I'm the occasional drunk walking back to South End when it's nice out. Nothing to be overly concerned about. Keep your wits about you as you would anywhere else.
I walked around most of the uptown area down towards the TWC and back to the City Center Marriott. It was pleasant, light foot traffic, people walking dogs---totally ok.
