Hello all! Hoping I can get some more information about the Charlotte area from this forum. A little about us.. My husband and I are both Registered Nurses and my husband just accepted a position in Gastonia. I have a very good prospect in the works that would be located in Charlotte. We have visited some of the suburbs of Charlotte and really like the Huntersville and Matthews area. Being from Michigan we don't know much about either areas just that they stood out to us more so than the others.
We have 2 young children (5 and 1) so schools are pretty important to us. Also, with one of us working in Gastonia and possibly Charlotte we are looking to stay somewhat in between the two however, one of us is okay driving a little further if need be. We don't like too much hustle and bustle but we don't want to be bored out of our minds either (if that makes sense). We are looking to meet other young families so that would also be a plus. We are looking at homes in the $200-$250k range but will probably rent for a couple months until we know for sure where we want to be. Looking to rent something in the range of $900-$1100/month.
Any advice as to what areas would be good for us? We desperately need some help seeing as how we will be moving in about a month and have no clue where we are going to live

Belmont sounds like it would be a good match for you.

Nice column about Belmont, NC
Belmont NC neighborhood Ideas

Matthews to Gastonia would be a horrible commute. Huntersville to Gastonia is not much better.

Belmont is nice as well as there are some really nice homes around Gastonia. Its not a far drive to Lake wylie area either 20 minutes, Plus you would have SC taxes bonus and Clover schools should you have children.

????

Belmont is in NC, between Gastonia & Charlotte. Gastonia is in NC, too. How are you getting SC taxes & Clover schools into this?

Renting seems like the better way to go until you lock down the 2nd job. If you are looking at jobs through CHS, they have hospitals in Lincolnton, Kings Mountain, & Shelby. They are more likely to produce an opening, depending on if you are specialized.

2 of the elementary schools in Kings Mountain have earned the federal blue ribbon designation.

Property taxes in SC are not always less than NC.

How are the schools in the Belmont area? I also was looking at Mount Holly. Any opinions on that area?

Mount Holly & Belmont have different schools with some overlap. If you are only choosing between the two I'd choose Belmont. There are many more apartments & rentals in Gastonia. There are 3 good elementary schools in SE Gastonia. you could also look to see if you find something in Cramerton, which is between Gastonia & Belmont.
