My son just graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (graphic design) from Winthrop. So far, no luck in finding a job in the Charlotte area. Just throwing this out there in case anyone has suggestions. His student loan payments will begin soon....he's open to most anything with benefits.

I'm a graphic designer with 15 years experience and I've been trying to find a job in the Charlotte since August. Few and far between with lots of competition.

Freelancing. That may be the short-term solution . . . get the portfolio spiffed up, hit the streets, knock on doors, hand out cards. Network, network, network.

No bennies w/ freelancing but better than no income. Once he gets some assignments . . . and establishes relationships . . . someone may have an opening and he could go fulltime.

Meanwhile, he can defer student loan payments if he has to. You will need to check on this to find out what paperwork has to be filed, etc.

I too am a graphic designer here. Finding a job is tough and there is a ton of people gunning for the same jobs. Luckily I came here and had two job offers my first day but I have been trying to find another job so I can leave my current employer but like others have mentioned there is a lot of competition and a whole lot of the employers out there want to pay you the bare minimum. Unfortunately people here are so desperate for jobs they take them thus making it possible for employers to keep up the practice of low pay. I took a nasty hit in pay coming here from NY. It's all relative but fortunately I do a bunch of freelance on the side to make up the difference. I do plan on building up my freelance base so I can just work from home but I have the luxury of being able to get health coverage through my wife if the time comes.

All this talent! Now if I could find some good AEs (emphasis: good - meaning - bring in the business). . . I would just open a full service agency and employee all you talented professionals!
