Having just moved here, I haven't explored Uptown and the surrounding area much. I have a free morning tomorrow. Where specifically should I go, preferably to walk (with a stroller) to see some nice areas? I'm thinking beyond the corner of Tryon and Trade, if that helps.

I wouldn't try it with a stroller. Why don't you just stroll down Tryon? Starting at 1st and work your way up. Once you get up to the top, make a left and walk down College.

I enjoy walking from tryon through 4th ward or even to South End. To heck with the light rail, I am a walker.

So I just start at 1st and Tryon and head south? I thought I'd ask since I know neighborhoods can change very quickly. Thanks a lot for your ideas!

Cheesehead...don't worry about using a stroller uptown. Unless you have a gianatic double-wide, you are fine (I take my 20 month old daughter strolling around downtown when it is nice).

This is what I would do. Park for free along the light rail and ride the light rail into uptown. Get off at 3rd Street/Convention Center. Walk north until Tryon. Right on Tryon to Trade. Left on Trade down toward Gateway village. Take a right on Graham. Take a Right on 8th Street. Cross back over Tryon and make a right on College. Make a left on 7th street. Go down a block and take your kid to ImagiOn ImaginOn Home Page (free childrens library...your kid, no matter what age, will love it). After you are done, cross the street to Reid's grocery store and get yourself a drink/snack and then hop the train back to you car (train is right between ImaginOn and Reid's). Enjoy!

Is there anyplace in that area I should look out for more than normal city awareness? Any streets not to cross, etc.?

The only area I would hesitate to continue into would be Tryon heading north once you have reached 11th St.

From Trade and Tryon (the center of uptown) if you continued down Tryon south you would get a nice little walk. Where South Tryon meets Camden take a left onto Camden into Southend and stop at Pike's Soda Shop for a bite to eat or just for ice cream You don't really want to walk further down S. Tryon than Camden.
