I didn't hear it, but a few people have asked me what the loud noise was early this morning - between 4 and 5 a.m. or so...

I've heard it compared to a hot air balloon, if the hot air balloon was flying only about 100 feet in the air - so, maybe that's the answer.

A family member heard it out near the water at around 5:30 a.m., and someone about five miles away heard it about an hour before.

Anyone else hear it, know what it was?

Default I heard it at 5am and again at 5:25

This first time it was like a loud continuous blast of a extemely loud hot air balloon (or maybe a jet engine). First was a constant sound that lasted 20 to 25 seconds. At 5:25am it started again and instead of a constant blast it was several short durational noises. Same sound but each one lasted about 5 seconds. I live down brawley school, and quite a few of my neighbors heard this. Have no idea what it is.

Any one else hear the noise this morning at about 4:00 AM? Sounded like footsteps from some large godzillian like metal creature fom outer space. What was that? It woke me up from a sound sleep...amazingly loud.

Arthur Kill in Staten Island. If everyone there isn't green by now, they will be shortly.
