I like Dunkin Donuts coffee ... we got those too!
If a latte is what I MUST have there's Panera, and a really good coffee place on New Hope Road about 1 mile east of New Hope and Beaty. Very good espresso! They're a combo coffee house and clay place where you can make clay things and paint 'em up. Mmmm it might be named Clay Cafe.
And there's espresso in Belmont and Mount Holly too.

Why am I saying this? :-) No, stay away from Gaston County! Nothing to see here! Head to Mecklenburg, to the east! Bwahahaha.

I couldn't agree more abcornwell. I love the easy drive down 74 to the airport or uptown Charlotte. We rarely venture onto I-85. This is a well kept secret for those looking to move to this area.

I will be in Gastonia next week with my two sons and my daughter and her two sons. I have been reading the posts and it seems like 2 different Gastonias are being talked described. I realize you cannot please everyone. Please let me know how the community theater, museums, child friendly activities/recreation. Any info would be helpful. I am an addictions counselor so I look forward to living and working in the area.

Gastonia is fine. I go there frequently. Just scope out the neighborhoods.
Look at Gaston, Lincoln & Cleveland Counties for actifvities/recreation. Gastonia has the most shopping out here, but it you think regionally, you may find something that you would have overlooked otherwise.

My wife's cousin and his family lived in Gastonia several years ago,and they loved it. I think the close proximity to Charlotte was the main thing they liked about it. My wife and I drove through there this past Summer, and it seemed to be a pretty nice town.

Geeze louise those stupid yankees are spending $250k for a 1700 sq. Ft. Bungalow in mcadenville just cause it sez saussey burbank.. And there isn't a starbucks nearby!
So plez keep spreading the word, gastonia is still the murder capital of the world, murders per capita since the 1970's.. So the hummer driving rich stay away!
I'm a gastonia native and a former lint head who has to work in "sin city" charlotte and "traffic city" union county. So be careful for what you wish for!!!!
All the yankees have already bought up every square inch along the catawba river and the gods are angry, that's why their docks are sitting in the mud at their $2million-dollar river cabins, hehehe!!
Cheers to all,even the yankees!

CommunityTheater: There is Gaston Little Theater and Gaston School of the Arts. GLT produces about every 2 months and casts adults and children. Last one I went to was Oklahoma, pretty good. GSOA is for children only and produces a fall, spring and summer production. Highly professional for children. They also offer art, music and drama lessons for all ages - love them!!
Museum: People come from all over to go to the Schiele Museum. It used to be free to Gaston County residents, but I think they just started charging a small fee. There is an outdoor exhibit that's kind of like a "living history" thing, on certain weekends. The indoor is kind of like a natural history museum. Has had some art exhibits also.
Of course, proximity to Charlotte opens up a whole lot more. We attend the opera in Charlotte every 2 months.

Gastonia, when you take a step back, isn't really that bad. I grew up there from the time I was 6 until I went off to college and then on and off again until last year. Like others have said, there are some nice parts of Gastonia and there are some parts you want to stay away from. I lived off New Hope Road and it was a nice neighborhood and I have felt that the eastern part of the city is much nicer than the western part.
Does Gastonia have character? In my opinion it doesn't but it does have cheap real estate, pretty much every big box store you can think of except costco, and like others have said, it's a pretty easy drive into Charlotte.
You will find people in G-Town who either love it or hate it. If you want a more cosompolitan feel then look elsewhere, Gastonia is more laid back quiet suburbia, at least the part that I grew up in. Me? If I were living in suburb I would prefer Huntersville or Davidson but that's just me.

I have lived in Gastonia all my life and I think that is a great place to stay, the neighborhood previously mentioned in West Gastonia is the truth, the fact is every city have a poverty section and West Gastonia and some of South Gastonia is ours that person should have tried other areas or maybe for the money they have they got what they paid for you can most definitely find cheap rent and homes in those areas. Moving towards areas of New Hope, Redbud, Union, and nearby areas you will find very nice homes, condos, and apartments with Gastonia being the suburbia of Charlotte there are amples amount of new and up to date properties with a nice price tag. Gastonia also have access to overflowing recreation for families and individuals I will not go on and on about the significance of Gastonia but I will encourage you to personally come and view our city or research us you will find much needed information. I hope that this helps and Gastonians have received a new neighbor.
