True, but also use of the term poor white trash predated redneck, at least in the part of Michigan that I grew up in. You did not have to act trashy to be classified that way. Being poor & white were the only qualifications. That might explain some of the blurring of lines, in some people's minds.

As northerners in general tend to be more "in touch" with their ethnic backgrounds, you are more likely to hear the trashier acting ones referred to by their appropriate ethnic slur. I will not repeat any of them here, but my particular background has a number of ethnic stereotypes associated with it, all of which were true for my family, and led me to be personally referred to as a greasy ___, throughout most of my years in the north.

I like Poor (often pronounced "po" by other ethnicities) white trash better. It isn't so exclusionary. It is nice to be able to carry such a title and not have to worry about qualifying with the appropriate rural background thing. As a matter of fact, I feel like I live around elitist here on the Redneck Riviera of nowthwest Florida. We call Moonshine "Everclear". Thanks for your input.

True story ... the bar down the street from where I grew up used to sell beer by the bucket. I am not talking about bottles of beer in a bucket of ice, I am talking about beer ... in a bucket. My grandfather used to spend his entire day sitting out on the stoop with a plastic cup, scooping beer up out of the bucket until it was empty, at which point he would send the kids out for a refill.
No washing machine or dogs. There was a bum who we used to pay a dollar to to do backflips though. Guy was talented ... could have been in a circus I guess.
