Large metro area: Charlotte

Medium metro: Charleston

Those would be my recommendations. Both are great!

Is there an original music scene? I know Asheville has one and is not a very far drive away.
OK, if you like rock, it's here. There is hard rock, classic rock, jazz, blues and acoustic. I can't do country either There is some original music as well. Check out Smiley's Acoustic Cafe, MoJoe's, Gottrocks's, Rhythm's on Trade and there are others. I can PM you some of the bands here.

What do you play?

Thanks, that's great to know! I'll check the bands out at some point. I play all the standard instruments, and am working on recording some originals right now. In the future I would love to join a local cover band and/or original band wherever I happen to move to.
