I need to leave Charlotte to get to Raleigh around lunchtime - I noticed the construction traffic has increased recently north of Charlotte, along I-85, from exit 52 to 70. I'm in a bit of a time crunch, so don't want to waste too much time in stop and go traffic. Google maps traffic shows red most of the time.
What about taking Route 49 from 485? Route 49 goes through Mt. Pleasant, Richfield, and then connect to I-74 North. Then I can just reconnect to I-85. Is Route 49 a bad highway with tons of traffic lights?
NC 49 isn't too bad, even the sections that are still 2 lanes. But instead of taking I-74 north to Greensboro and then back onto I-85, which seems out of the way to get to Raleigh, I would just stay on 49 until it merges with US 64 in Asheboro. Then take US 64 to Raleigh, which is a four lane road with much less traffic than I-85.

This, but I doubt it saves more than a few minutes if anything. If you're coming from uptown you'd probably have to take 85 out of the city anyway just to get off of it at 485 to get over to 49.

Heading northeast of Charlotte from Tega Cay is inevitably going to mean getting around/through Charlotte, so that will be an issue, but at least by going 64/49, you avoid dealing with the stretch between Greensboro to Raleigh, which can have its traffic issues, especially around RTP.
And as far as time is concerned, you're right. It's not a huge timesaver, but it is typically more reliable since the unpredictability of a traffic accident, construction, etc. is going to have a much more significant impact on the interstates between Charlotte and Raleigh than on the 49/64 route. And to me, it's just a less stressful (and even scenic in a few places) drive.
