Also, back in the good old days of the one room school house they didn't have to worry about crazy people walking into their classroom and holding them hostage or worse. With CMS's lack of security in their schools, lack of locked doors and security cameras, it is all too easy for someone to just walk right in. A sad but true fact. So I will gladly shell out $ to a private school that is a locked safe environment for my children.
Have you been to any private schools that are "locked safe environments"? I've got experience with several and I sure don't think they are any more locked up than the public schools I've been in. For instance, Charlotte Country Day's classrooms open up to the outside world - like an old motel.

Additionally, the op wanted to know about particular schools in south Charlotte, so giving her the rundown on your childs school in Steele Creek doesn't really tell her what those schools are like I'm afraid.

Yes, actually back in our TX town all of the private and public schools are locked safe environments. I also worked at a few. We will be touring a few soon here and if they don't have that then I am not interested. I was providing info to the op about my recent experience and also I do have friends who come from Matthews schools who have had similar experiences with those schools, so I doubt it really varies too much town to town here. Also, I was told the Christian school on Erwin is a locked safe environment. So I will be looking into that school as well. Also, do you currently have elem. aged children b/c things have changed some? I am unsure why you feel the need to rip apart every post that I put up. I am soley giving info to the OP, that they requested.

Is there a cap of number of students per class? In CA there is a law that insures less than 20 students up to 3rd grade. Anybody have experience with Rea elementary or Weddington elementary? Thanks.
Here is the thing there is a cap, a state ratio, however, in NC if a school "unexpectantly" goes over state ratio they can just apply for an exemption and basically have a large class, hence the 29 children that made up my daughters class.

nkjaws, I promise you I am not trying to rip any of your posts apart, and I am sorry if you are offended. I am sincerely only interested in provided info to newcomers that is as accurate as possible.

I believe what you are saying about schools in Texas being more locked down. But since the subject is Charlotte Mecklenburg schools I think it's only fair to compare schools in Charlotte, whether public or private - not schools in Charlotte to schools in other states. I do hope you find what you are looking for in a private school since public school has not worked at for you.

Oh, and no, my youngest is no longer an elementary age student - he's in high school. But, I do volunteer in several schools and am familiar with our public schools in that way

Yes, I understand your point of view. However, the OP is also from TX and she needs to understand that she is in for a big wake up call if she thinks that CMS is anything like TX schools. While I can only eloborate on my experiences with CMS one of the teachers at my daughters old school had two children at that school and she pulled them out as well and put them in a Catholic school that she says has a security camera, locked doors, and a secured entry with an access card to get into the main part of the school. I don't know the name of the school, just that it is near uptown. As for me, we did look at one private school already and it did also have a locked door policy but we were not happy with its location. I think in terms of safety CMS is lacking afterall, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I'd rather be safe then sorry and want my children to go to a school where I know they are protected from all the bad in this world.

NKjaws: What grade was that? In CA in our area there are up to 30 children in the classroom from 4th grade up.

This is second grade, and inside the school they had 40 children in one first grade class. I believe the NC state ratio for second grade is 22.
