Facing a quick relo through work to NC - came out of the blue (for me, anyway!) and I don't know the first thing about the area. Husband will be working in Charlotte and we're considering Cornelius and Davidson. 2 children - one going into Sophomore (High School) and one 7th grade - used to small, but academic, Cathlolic schools. Children like music, theater, recreational sports, design/technology, etc.
Can anyone recommend good places for families within small commute of Charlotte? (We want to avoid the New York commute that has plagued us for years). Really want somewhere that we can walk around and pop into places for coffee without having a huge drive, somewhere with great small schools, and a friendly, outgoing feel. (Not a bleeding heart, but we're much more liberals than pick up truck and deer hunting).
Lived very close to Sandy Hook, so used to a small town but, obviously, must have somewhere with low crime rate as SH is still very raw to us.
Also - are there any realtors who do both rentals and sales/purchases? We'll need to rent initially but then buy. We're used to realtors who work on the MLS (Multiple Listing Service).
If anyone can recommend a realtor who will do all - that's better than using a couple of different ones.
You could live in either Davidson or Cornelius and get to either of the schools. The important question is where's the job located?
ETA: I see it's in Charlotte but where in Charlotte? The commute down 77 will not be a fun commute for your husband if it's in uptown (downtown) Charlotte.
Job is located in Charlotte center - very close to Time Warner. Doesn't need to be a Catholic school (sorry if it sounded like that) so long as a small one; nurturing, academic.

Private or charter would be the way to go if you want a small school. You won't find a small public school around Charlotte. I can only speak to points north of the city. I live near the Mecklenburg/Cabarrus County line. It's not walkable but everything is in a short driving distance. There is the Cannon School that you could check out. The Charter schools have already held their lotteries for this upcoming school year. You could try Lake Norman Charter for next year. It's a 5-12th grade. It's highly sought after charter. There's also the Community School of Davidson another popular charter.
Don't really want to pay over $3k for rent, and I want to downsize so nothing over $400k. Would love to find a family oriented community that has a community pool or something.

You could check out Highland Creek as a starting point. You can also check out Moss Creek and Cannon Crossing. You might also like Winding Walk but the two houses on the market currently are around $410K. I do know that a house is going up for rent very soon. All neighborhoods mentioned are family friendly and all have neighborhood pools. Moss Creek has the best pool and Cannon Crossing has the smallest and is the only one without lifeguards.
How much are you planning on spending on school tuition?
Don't live in Cornelius or Davidson (or the majority of Huntersville for that matter) if you want to avoid a long commute to uptown.
Based on that description, I'd say Belmont might be your best bet.
