I'm looking for something nicer (and better tasting) than a grocery store birthday cake, but not as upscale (or as pricey) as a specialty or wedding cake type of cake. In other words, not Costco or H-T, but not the $4-a-serving type cake either.

Any suggestions? Is there a bakery that does good ol' birthday cakes with real icing? I need this for Saturday. Thanks for any ideas!

I am not sure what area you are convenient to but, here are a few suggestions:
Suarez Bakery (formally Federal Bake Shop) in the Park Rd. Shopping Center. Carlos is the owner and that is who I would ask to speak with when placing an order, but you better not wait too much longer 704-525-0145.
Cakes by Victoria Cakes by Victoria 116-c W. John St. Matthews, NC; She might be pricier than what you want.
Hansel & Gretel's Bakery 704-596-1232 great reputation, around the University area.
My favorite on this side of town, Audrey's Cakes 704-545-4537 11211 Lawyers Rd. (just tell her what price range you need to stay in and see what she can do),

I 2nd SUAREZ Bakery (use to be Federal Bake Shop) in Park Rd Shopping Center at the corner of Woodlawn Rd & Park Rd.

Not that cheap but not over the top either. VERY good!

Or at least we have ALWAYS had good luck there and drive from Uptown (10 minutes) sometimes just to have some treats.

Love me some Dean & Deluca too and we have one just a few blocks away Uptown but always bypass them for Suarez.

GOOD LUCK!

Suarez Bakery in Park Road shopping center gets my vote. They even made us a gluten-free cake for a birthday party and it was as good as a regular cake!

I've had a birthday cake at Suarez and thought it was just average. I've only had it once, but willing to give it another try.

The best cakes in Charlotte is a small place in Matthews called Jimmie's Sweets. They have the best pound cakes around. The lemon pound cake is the best cake I've ever had. As for specialty cakes, I'm not sure. Look them up and give them a call.
