Specifically, we wanted to know why Roberts didn’t accept state resources when they were offered Wednesday morning. At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Governor Pat McCrory said his office began offering resources as early as Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m.
Roberts, in response to a question from On Your Side Investigates, said the city was only prepared for peaceful protests Wednesday night.
“I was in conversation with the governor early in the morning,” Roberts said. “During the day, the central city, the center city was peaceful and during the day we had indication of peaceful protest; we saw some peaceful protest.”
She said she relied on the advice of first responders in deciding whether to declare a state of emergency.
“We are a team here in Charlotte. We are a team. I rely on my experts to give me appropriate advice at the appropriate time for the appropriate resources that will be needed,” she said.
It is a complicated situation, but I can see the point our mayor and police chief attempted to articulate.
If you prepare to expect the worst from people you more often than not get it.
I think they were erring on the trust side. Expecting Charlotte to wake up and smell the roses. To see that destructive, random violence is/was not the answer.
They hesitated to call up the NG because it didn't show trust in the character of our people.
*DISCLAIMER: I have never nor would I ever vote for our current mayor.*

If the national guard was brought in, wouldn't that have spurned greater confidence from the business community?
And, at the very least, the Mayor's tone does not speak to someone who's leading:
“We are a team here in Charlotte. We are a team. I rely on my experts to give me appropriate advice at the appropriate time for the appropriate resources that will be needed,” she said.
We are a team.
Even if the Mayor does indeed believe that governing is a group effort, because of the office she holds, the buck stops with her.

Didn't say I agreed with her, just that I tried to see their point of view.
I also agree with you, that calling them early may have instilled a bit more confidence in the business community who, in my opinion, suffered an unwarranted injustice.
