Default Looking for a small town near charlotte

I recently took a job where I cover the entire east coast so i can finally make the move I've been thinking of. I still have a lot of fmaily in the pittsburgh area. I currently live outside of PHiladelphia but would love to move further south to a much smaller town but has to be near a major airport. I would love something older but somewhat historic that has a younger population. I may be dreaming. Briefly looked at Shelby (mixed reviews and still a little bigger than I want) and Monroe (a little too big). I'm 31 and single. and I have a small dog. Any suggestions?

Default check out Matthews

Matthews has the small town features, downtown with character, some historic buildings. Near enough to Charlotte proper, about 20 minutes (outside of rush hour)
probably 25 minutes to Charlotte Douglas airport.
southern Matthews runs into Waxhaw and Weddington which are more rural, but certainly have the elements of typical suburbs.
good luck

Lots of traffic on the south side of Charlotte. That is what ruled out that area for us (Matthews and a lot of Union County.) We ended up in Lincolnton, which still definitely has a small town feel. 25 minute drive to the airport - and there's usually not an issue with traffic on the way there, unless it's on 321 at 85 (which you can detour around.)

We love it here!

How is Huntersville and the northern area? I will be working in sales so Rush Hour should not be too bad but I am hoping it isn't too crazy. I live in metro NY now and am used to long traffic delays but I am moving to upgrade the quality of life.
Any innsights into elementary schools would be great as well.
