I am moving to Charlotte from NYC and firmly believe that a development like Phillips Place should be built in Uptown. Uptown is utterly liferless and needs an infusion. Suburban Southpark and Ballantyne should not be the centers of social activity for this "city". Charlotte has a lot of potential and needs a shot in the arm.
I guess moving from NYC you might not realize that Charlotte is not comparable to NYC, Philadelphia or Boston but is in the growing stages and more and more venues are moving to the central area as well as in the highly populated outlying areas such as Ballantyne. It is really difficult to understand how people from major metro areas don't understand and cope with this. We all want great things to happen downtown. When Charlotte finally grows up, it will have all of the things that you want. "Infusions" don't just happen. They occur over time. Have you have you been downtown (uptown) after 10:00pm. ? It definately isn't lifeless then. As far as I am concerned, they can't build stuff quick enough downtown, but it's coming. I have heard people from NYC say that they think it is exciting being in a place and watching it boom. You already have in in NYC, we are just growing, and and it really is exciting.

Only thing I would like to see is more live music venues...maybe even a street or section devoted mostly to that. As much as I am not too fond of Buffalo anymore, there are many live music venues there where bands like the Goo Goo Dolls got started. detroit is similar in that regards. Charlotte has enough yuppy, white collar type establishments. need more places like the Visulite.

Last time I stayed downtown, I looked out of my hotel window at 2:30am and the streets were so crowded that it looked like Times Square. The problem was, in the 1970s it was foolish to be downtown at night because of the unbelievable crime. That began in the late 60s and ran for around 20 years. Times have changed

i dont understand what it is that certain people want to do when they say uptown is "lifeless". bars, clubs, restaurants, more on the way. what else would you like to be doing? just asking not trying to be a jerk.

Monday evening at 6pm I'm sure it's dead unless there is an event, but other than that it's always busy.

Have you been uptown on a Saturday at 10 or 11pm? It is far from dead. A lot of stuff goes on during the week too...live after 5 as an example.

It's not a mall per se...It will have shops, restaurant, a movie theatre, condos/apts, etc. Better than a mall.

I didn't see anyone else mention this yet, but I discovered that the Epicentre will feature a dueling piano bar called Howl at the Moon. This is a national chain - and I expect that it will be alot of fun.
