Favorite restaurant is The Penguin. Spending $50+ for meals is overrated. Especially after you try their fried pickles.

What about more casual, sports bar/pub type places?
South End Brewery is good. Alexander Michael's is a good pub. Also the Moosehead Grill, the Graduate, Selwyn Avenue Pub, Midtown Sundries and the Fox & Hound are good bars.

Wow - when did that happen? I know I haven't been there in a while, but I didn't know it was gone. I used to love that place!!!

Default Eats

Lulu's on Central east of Uptown is excellent, upscale but not fancy, if that makes sense. Sort of a city feel, despite being located in a little old bungalow.

For a down-home lunch, Lola's uptown (on Tryon) is a great meat + 2 veg. place. Good roast chicken, jalapeno cornbread. I actually like it better than Mert's for food, but of course doesn't have the atmosphere & Mert's is definitely worth the trip.

Dish on Thomas in Plaza Midwood is a nice neighborhoody place, casual but tasty. Good meatloaf & biscuits, and every plate comes with a deviled egg.

Of previously made recommendations, I agree that Carpe Diem and Zada Jane's are good. Love the Penguin. This is all assuming non-ethnic food options.

It's been within the past few months. It's now Wood's on South, featuring famous chef Marvin Woods, who lives in Atlanta. He used to have a cooking show on Turner South.

Wow. Your social life is probably a lot like ours. Southend Brewery and (I believe) Midtown Sundries have been closed for a while!

Midtown Sundries closed, too??? Wow, I need to get out more. Those used to be all my old haunts before the kids! They can't have been closed for too long because it wasn't that long ago!!!

I don't know which Midtown you usually went to but I'm pretty sure the Mt. Island location is still open. The other locations are (were?) in the University area, in Cornelius and on Pineville-Matthews Rd.

I was thinking of the original which is gone to make way for the new Target/Home Depot/Trader Joe's where Midtown Square used to be. I don't get out much either.
