May I ask if I77 south towards Charlotte on the way to Hickory, is that a very busy stretch? I think it's towards States ville on the map.

That stretch has the worst traffic in the Charlotte area. The way to get to Charlotte from Hickory is to take 321 south to 85 and take 85 onto town

No. I'm asking once we get off route 81 and get on i77 south, is that stretch to i40 towards Hickory bad traffic also or am I ok going that route?

I'm just trying to find out ahead if time so I'm not surprised.

No you'll be fine coming down 81 to 77 and then to 40, should have zero traffic issues that way unless of course an accident happens. It's cruise control city! Enjoy! (now watch something happen )

The stretch of I-77 from I-81 to I-40 in Statesville is very easy going. Once you climb down off the Blue Ridge escarpment and cross the state line you should be able to do the speed limit, 70, most of the way at any time. There are great views coming down off the Blue Ridge, by the way. Unfortunately there are no scenic pulloffs.

Stop in Wytheville, Virginia before you switch to I77 from I81. Gas is about 10 cents or cheaper than North Carolina.
As mentioned that stretch is a breeze, light traffic. You will be coasting most of the way down the mountain from Wytheville to NC border. And it a beautiful stretch too.
It is very rural from the border to Statesville and Statesville also has small town traffic.

There is several other walking trails for local walk, other than Bakers Mountain
Some I need to take my kayak too like Glenn Hilton Memorial Park, Henry Fork Park, Jacobs Fork Park, Geitner Rotary Park, Hickory City Park.

Hickory is ideal location for an hour trip to the High Country (Boone Area) an hour to Upper Creek Falls or Linville Falls , Pilot Mountain,To the North is Stone Mountain within an hour. Great place for hike and serenity.

Here is pictures I posted awhile back.

Exit to take?
Exits 126 or 125 are typically used to get into the main part of Hickory. You turn left off those exits (going west) and it'll go towards your big box retailers and the "main drag" of Hickory. Turn right off those exits and it'll take you back through to downtown and much smaller retail areas which are quaint in their own right. Exit 123 takes you to highway 321 which following that north takes you into the other side of Hickory with still more retail/restaurants/minor league baseball/lake and then on to points in the foothills and mountains. South off exit 123 will have you exit Hickory into much more rural area but that's the quickest way to get to Charlotte from Hickory.
