One other notable thing about CLT: the City does a lot with little. The tax burden in NY is so much greater than that of CLT, yet Charlotte provides far superior greenways; landscaped public areas; free outdoor events; environmental causes like their (far superior) recycling program; etc.
Very very seldom have I felt that my tax dollars are wasted in Charlotte.
I don't quite understand your negative attitude towards southern places, i.e., the deep south. I have always found places in the deep south and other southern states quite pleasing and absolutely not primitive. Maybe you can tell me what I have missed in my travels which is quite regular. Other than the ungodly heat during the summer months, I have enjoyed living in the south and working in all southern states. Generally, I find the people sincere and hospitable. I haven't see "primitive." But, I may be missing something? Just curious.
COMPROMISE: you can have beautiful tree-covered landscape with easy drive to beach and mountains, or only beach surroundings all year, or just the mountains all year long. Central Piedmont region offers beautiful surroundings, but no stunning vistas or miles of coastline.
You can enjoy mild winters, but must tolerate increased heat and humidity of NC summers.
You can experience small-town atmosphere and community feel in any dozens of central NC cities, but you'll have to drive to largest cities for more exclusive shopping and dining options. You can't have it all in any single location.
Affordability to be able to raise a family, similar to cost of living of cities much more isolated in far-flung locations. NC offers reasonable living expenses with East Coast's biggest cities reachable by car within same day.
SOUTHERN has very positive connotations all around the country with southern hospitality, manners, beautiful scenery, etc. are all seen as desirable qualities that exposure to would be welcomed. All which is available throughout South East. Ideally Americans want the best of every region all in one place. The Deep South has additional connotations of geographic isolation, extreme heat, extreme poverty, extreme racism, less educated population, you know all of this already.
PRIMITIVE was referring to how well a state maintains its infrastructure, how advance it government agencies function, protect its citizens, the aesthetics of state's highways, how high or low a state's standards are for stewardship of the state.
If you can't visually see the differences between how well each state is maintaining its roads, etc. like #1 Florida with fantastic roads, perfect ditches and drainage on both side, every highway light working perfectly statewide, etc.
Compared with Georgia who was too lazy to even ponder if it was a bad idea for a region's economy and miilions of drivers to depend on a single highway, and how necessary it is to have at least viable alternate route for each freeway in Atlanta's original layout of interstates built in the 1960's with no new highways after many decades watching Atlanta's population triple. Atlanta and Georgia's roads have the lowest standards with no maintenance oversight of anything. Atlanta's roads are descending into 3rd world conditions.
NC's government agencies and functions are among the best and the state's holds itself to very high standards, and the pride taken in the state's amenities and destinations across the state is easy to recognize. NC's extensive infrastructure is in bad shape because it is aging. But they're on it, as evidenced in this inventory assessment of NC roads given to legislature bi-annually. I showed to road geeks on a nationwide forum, and no one could show any comparable from any other state.
APPROACHING JUNCTIONS WITH IMPORTANT HIGHWAYS WHILE TRAVELLING ON NON-INTERSTATE ROADS: NORTH CAROLINA VS. GEORGIA
ANY QUESTIONS?
Even in booming Atlanta, flush with cash from tens of billions in new developments and construction currently in progress, they can't even keep tiny signs readable by performing the most basic maintenance functions during the 20 years or so it took for these to fade.
My overall intent is clear, so please don't search for any casual phrase to be offended by.

Do not get me wrong because I am not saying that clt has a never ending supply of activities. But when compared with cities of similar size then I think it is probably at least average. My wife and I do not seem to have trouble finding things to do. But that may require reading the newspaper on Friday to see what is happening over the weekend. Oh, but I know some do not read the newspaper. So I guess your out of luck. But there are some valuable things to do around town that never seem to get mentioned. The many festivals in the communities surrounding clt, Highland games in huntersville, Greek festival, jazz festival, a downtown walking tour of 4th ward neighborhood , Charlotte history museum on shamrock dr, historic brattonsbille outside of rock hill, the museum in Gastonia and there are more. But some people think that if it is not the smithsonian then it is not worth the time. That is unfortunate because sometimes you can spend little money and have an enjoyable, entertaining and informative day doing something that many people neglect. My advice to people is to research the things that Charlotte does have to offer and take advantage of them rather than complaining. Go to the Charlotte chamber to better understand what is available.

Dude...give me a break. Metro Atlanta needs a more extensive freeway network for sure, but GA DOT does a pretty good job with maintenance, current mishaps notwithstanding.

The Schiele Museum in Gastonia is affiliated with the Smithsonian. It's a nice museum in a nice neighborhood. When I've mentioned it in threads you'd think it was a porn shop in a terrible ghetto, from the reactions that I've gotten or it's ignored, so I usually don't bother anymore.
Charlotte lacks a soul, identity and culture... *shrugs*
Charlotte has all of that (not sure what the hell soul means because you could twist that up into a bunch of junk). Nascar, banking, gold, new south, etc is Charlotte's history, identify, culture, etc. I mean, what the hell is a soul in regards to a city? Lol..like a soul brother? soul music? Maybe it's not to your liking but it's all there. Some cities have more history or identity than others but to say Charlotte doesn't have any is ridiculous...every city has some history and some sort of local/regional identity.
If the most common complaint about Charlotte is that it is perceived as too clean, too new and too nice, I guess we'll just have to accept that. There are worse things than being too "bland".
That said, I would argue we have plenty of grit - despite the popular complaint.

Good advise. There are really good music venues around town and there is no shortages of activities in the performing arts area. If anyone can't find things to do in Charlotte, it is the fault of the city. As you mentioned, all one has to do is check with the Chamber of Commerce or even buy a Creative Loafing. There seems to always be some sort of ethnic festival around when the weather permits. The only thing that Charlotte is really lacking is a beach. And for the few lonely souls that post of how hard it is to meet people, all they have to do is look up the "meet-up" groups. There are groups of many different interests. My advice to all is to "get out there and look." The thing is that many people compare Charlotte with places much larger which is flattering. We may not have everything that they have, but at least we are growing and getting in new things and ideas. Most of the larger cities are losing population and many residents are coming here. Unfortunately for the complainers, they are not investing in whatever they find that is lacking.
