Mapquest gives me three options -

1. Highway 74 from the 485 through the Lumberton area, then crossing over into South Carolina.

2. South Carolina route through Lancaster/521 down to Florence, heading east just before Conway on Highway 22.

3. South Carolina route on 77 South toward Columbia, taking I-20 East across SC, then onto Highway 22.

Which one will be best for a Friday afternoon with the least amount of traffic? The Lancaster/521 route is the shortest distance, but that won't help me if I'm on backwood two-lane road. 74 seems risky, I remember A LOT of lights and slow speed limits through that area.

Any feedback?

Where in Charlotte are you departing from? What time Friday afternoon will you depart?

I'm in York County, about 4 miles off of the 77 just; very close to the 485 on-ramp. I'll be leaving town at 2pm.

I always do Option 2 from South Charlotte. It takes me 3.5 hours door to door (North Myrtle).

I avoid 74 at all costs, but that is just me.

Have fun!

I'd pick option 2 based on where you are leaving from and destination.

Thank you so much! My memory is not great but I think we tried the 74 route one time and it was a nightmare.

When I lived in Mooresville, I always went with option 2.

From here we'd go 485/74/52/9/38/501 and then 22 depending where in the Myrtle/North Myrtle area we were staying. Pretty much it seems like all the routes take pretty close to the same amount of time depending on who you get behind on those 2 lane roads! haha

We've been going to Ocean Isle the last couple of years pretty exclusively though and it's 485/74/130 as a pretty straight/easy drive.
