I currently live in a apartment in Noda. My wife and I are looking to purchase a home off of the Shamrock / Tipperary Rd / Oak Forest area.

We read about the recent shooting in the neighborhood. We Like the area and it seems like renovation is starting to begin a bit in the area. Should we be concerned with the shootings?

Any area that is transitional has big risks and big rewards. That is a transitioning area, that in a couple years could become really nice (and thus make you a lot of money in home equity) or the renovations could stagnate and the area doesn't fully revitalize. There will be more crime there than other areas of the city for the immediate future and you have to weigh that in your decision to invest in an up and coming area. Long term it could be a great investment.

It sounds like the recent shooting that you are referring to was between acquaintances so I wouldn't worry so much about that particular incident. That area is in transition. I recommend you visit the area several times to see if you feel safe. You should check the crime maps in that area and always be vigilant - wherever you are.

Just across W. T. Harris Blvd. is a cool, kinda hidden neighborhood - Grove Park - larger lots and, in my opinion more isolated from the crime element.

Any chance you might rent in the area first? Agreed the area is transitional at the moment which means you could see prices go up by waiting, but there's an equal likelihood you may not enjoy the area or that violence in the neighborhood or other factors could have a negative impact.

Just a thought.
