As a transplant from North Babylon 4 years ago, found that Home Depot and Lowes offer a pretty good variety of basic plants and info.
For a good local nursery, I found Gold Leaf Nursery in Monroe to be very good, but pricy.
Also found that by buying plants that native to the area is a lot better than trying to bring your L.I. ideas down here. Learned that the hard way.
Waxhaw has soil (clay) content similar to concrete, not that beautiful farmland soil you're used to on Long Island. Needs lots of ammenities and research to make things grow well. The latest drought doesn't help much either. Pay attention to the local gardening tips, they know what the're talking about.

Well Growers Outlet in Pineville probably has the largest selection and cheapest prices. I have great luck with their plants there (much better than the home improvement stores and on par with nicer nurseries). Be prepared when you go to Growers Outlet (we always bring a Southern Living Garden book with us) as there can be lot of people there and not a lot of help unless you are close to the building.
Growers Outlet is on South Blvd, just north of 51 (easy to get to from Waxhaw).

Hey Keith, I thought of Pikes, too. In searching for their address I ran across something that said Pikes was in trouble due to the drought. Is the Charlotte store still there? I hope so, because I really enjoyed shopping there.

I have not been there yet this year, was around Christmas and it all seemed good.

Everything seems to be A OK there. I drive by often and haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. I used to go to Youngs down 521, but have been much happier with the selection @ Pikes.

The day lily society for this area seems to favor Pikes.
