My wife and I are considering relocating from Portsmouth NH to North Carolina for my job in Statesville NC. We really like living in Portsmouth because of the downtown area - tons of bars/restaurants and plenty of events during the summer at the parks. All that is within walking distance to our house.
We're looking for a similar place to live near statesville. I'd like to keep my drive under 40 minutes so we naturally started looking at Charlotte.
Any recommendations for areas in charlotte where we can be close to a "downtown" area with things to do, but still be able to buy a single family home (don't want an apartment or condo)? Price isn't a concern as all the houses we've seen around the area are within our budget.
Briefly looked at mooresville as well - will have to visit to see if we like it.
Davidson is lovely and a vibrant downtown. Mooresville too if you stay away from the interstate area and consider the older parts of town near Main street. Salisbury NC is near the limit of your commute though quite nice in the large historic area and Winston-Salem is just beyond your travel limit. Statesville itself has a small renaissance downtown but compared to Portsmouth is insignificant.

Given that the OP wants to be a 40 minute drive from Statesville & the mess that is I 77, how many of those places actually fit the request?
Once one gets past exit 38 going north, it is often smooth sailing. So, under normal conditions, it is likely that it can be done from all the places I mentioned. But, as you say, #77 is a mess and he must be prepared for that or know Old Statesville Road. It also depends on the times of travel which we don't know. There is a chance he will be driving the opposite direction of the busy traffic. A truly precarious situation any way you look at it.

The OP said that price is not a concern because real estate was being found in the right range. That's not the same as price is unlimited.
You've made it abundantly clear that you look down your nose at Hickory. I think it's a nice place that should not be overlooked. I moved down from the MidAtlantic, from a town 10 miles from Center City Philadelphia. That might make me a hick, in your exalted opinion. Regardless, there is nothing wrong with people looking there. It fits the list better than a lot of other places, & it's in the timeframe.
