Lake Norman Area
Hi, I'm new to the boards here. My family and I have just relocated to Charlotte from S. Florida (as you may have guessed by my overly creative screen name) and we've fallen in love with the lake norman area. Huntersville & Davidson, in particular.
I know that there are quite a few of you on these boards that live up there and I'm trying to understand how you gained comfort in the idea of living close to the McGuire plant. I'm not trying to come across as glib or insincere, I truly want to know the thought process that you went through, if you even went through one at all.
My gut tells me that I'm completely overreacting to this but I find lots of conflicting information online and can't seem to get over the hump of truly being o.k. with it.
I consider myself to be very educated and probably understand more than most about how nuclear power gets generated, but like I said, for some reason can't get all the way there.
Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to offer me.

How close is too close to a radiation accident? If something were to happen, I am not sure that anyone would be able to get away in time. I just moved to Mooresville and I thought about it as well, but if it happens it happens. I used to live in San Diego and lived through a few relatively minor earthquakes and fires. I lived in the Midwest and watched a tornado bounce over the house when I was young. I dirve a motorcycle and I scuba dive as well. I understand the risks of what I do and take steps to mitigate the risks. But, you can't control what you can't control.

So how do you like it here compared to San Diego?

We relocated to Huntersville from south florida a year ago. I was concern too. but after living here and seeing Lake Norman in the spring and summer time I block it out of my mind. If something does happen I dont think it would make a difference even if you near south of charlotte too. Look at Port St lucie looks how built up that area is with the same situation.
Well its up to you if thats a major concern then I suggest looking other areas of Charlotte then.
The real estate is very good in the lake Norman area.
good luck

They give these radiation pills out if you live close enough to the plant - Good thing about our neighborhood is that you can easliy get to the interstate - We thought about it for a minute then jumped on our pontoon boat - grilled out on the islands - went tubing drank beer and forgot about all of that! It is a very nice place to be - I would trade a chance of nuclear posioning to the huge bugs in FLA anyday!

If it's not one thing it'll be another that gets ya. It's never been an issue for me and emergency planning/response/preparedness is actually in my line of work.
If you go to McGuires website you will find a map for zoning areas susceptible to exposure should there be an incident. And whether you are in that incident zone or not it is a good idea to have iodine tablets for radiation exposure. After all, a dirty bomb event is a very real possibility in any area.
There are SO MANY things at LKN to take your mind off of such an event that you shouldn't make yourself worry about it. The best thing you can do is prepare an adequate disaster plan for your family that will attempt to safeguard them against any man-made or natural disaster.
There is no other place in the Charlotte metro region that can provide you with the quality of life LKN does, my humble opinion of course. If it wasn't for the nuclear power plant, we wouldn't have the beautiful lake and the amenities it has garnished over the decades.
Just try not to think about it and like I said, prepare your family for any situation. The rest is 7th Heaven!

we thought the same thing coming from CA, but then we built our dream house on the lake and our #1 critieria was to be far away from the plant(out of sight out of mind) and it's out our control anyway. How long has the plant been here? How many leaks since it's been open? How many accidents? You could get hit by a bus crossing the street or hit by lightning. The second week I was here (1 1/2 yrs ago) a man was getting out of his truck afterwork at 5:30pm and was killied instantly by lightning. Now that scares me!

I grew up right down the road from McGuire, in a little neighborhood off Hwy. 16 called Country Valley. We never gave the proximity a second thought. I was born in 1975, and McGuire started up in 1981, so it's basically been around my whole life.
I live in Mooresville now, and we still don't give it a second thought. I think you'll find that for most natives, McGuire just isn't high on the list of things to worry about.

DITTO!!!!
I've lived in NYC, where anything can happen....I lived in Carmel, NY, which was in what we called "the lingering death zone" for the Indian Point NP plant, now I live in Mooresville. Nuclear incident or getting hit by a bus crossing the street...when it's your time, it's your time.
Having been in emergency services myself, I agree with Carolina Guy...be prepared, but don't forget to enjoy life. Don't dwell on what could happen, it'll make you nuts.
