They are building a new development near us in Concord (we are not really anywhere near downtown Concord they annexed us when our neighborhood was built 11 years ago). We are on the Meck/Cabarrus Line and we live in Cabarrus. It will be a Shea Home development. It's called Latana and it will straddle the Meck/Cabarrus line. I would recommend sticking with the Cabarrus side. I believe the starting prices will be in the 200's. Great schools. Close to 485,85 and 77. If you husband works second shift no problems commuting at that time of day. If you preferred to rent first you could look in Moss Creek down the road. They have townhomes that get rented out. Once again great schools. The only difference is the ES which is Odell ES VS Cox Mill ES.
There is a house for rent right now in Moss Creek. It's a 3 bedroom/2 bath and it's for rent for $ 1250 a month. They have a fantastic pool with water slides for the older kids and they have a baby pool and then another one for the toddlers/pre schoolers.
There are so many areas, it is sensory overload. One thing I did notice is I would find a fantastic listing and it looked perfect....pulled into the neighborhood and I felt like I was in the Movie "The Burbs". Some houses were absolutely beautiful and then the houses next door looked as if it was a junk yard.
Unfortunately I think you'll run into the "The Burbs" issue just about anywhere. It's probably most common where there is no HOA to maintain standards. Just about every community in the areas we are mentioning here will be HOA, so the "junkyard" should be limited.

It was mentioned before, but Steele Creek will have great proximity for you to Ayrsley and it's possible you could find some townhome or 3/2 options - it is Mecklenburg county though. There are smaller towns in the Belmont / Gastonia / Kings Mountain area like McAdenville (Christmas town USA), but I would defer to others more familiar with that area. I need to stick to more of the Union County area of NC since I know that area well.
In all fairness to Charlotte, I suppose this northern girl was expecting more southern charm and southern homes. I love Savannah and Hilton Head area as well as Raleigh. At this point we have 4 weeks left before there is no job.
Charlotte is a sprawling, modern city.. In my entire life I have never heard "Southern Charm" used to describe it. Where, exactly, did you hear that to expect it from your visit?
I used to live in a custom home development up near Huntersville.
On football Saturdays there were more Ohio State flags than UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake, ECU, WCU,and Appy State COMBINED. If you still long for Ohio once you get to Charlotte, there is plenty of Ohio around Charlotte. Some might even suggest more than enough!
