I'll be living in Uptown (off of S. Tryon - Camden South End) in a couple of months. However, I work near the airport and the closest route to work would be to take Tryon to West Blvd for about 4 miles then to Billy Graham. I tested this route out yesterday and the area seems very sketchy. I definitely felt like I needed to lock my doors and not make eye contact.

Is this a safe area to commute through? I just don't want to take chances. I suppose I could get on the interstate but that would add some time to my commute.

Please advise.

Yes, during the day with your doors locked. Make sure you leave plenty of room at stop lights between you and the next car--in case you have to punch it to avoid a carjacking. Seriously. Might want to buy a handgun too.

If you want to avoid the interstate you can also take S. Tryon to reach Billy Graham. Are you working off West. Blvd? You could take S. Tryon to Yorkmont to get to West Blvd.

I'll be working off of Beam so maybe I could take S. Tryon to Yorkmont and go from there.

I've actually thought about getting a concealed weapon permit. Just don't know what is involved with it...yet.

You can also take S. Tryon to Beam (two lights past Tyvola).

The only issue with this is that I'll be working pretty much at the intersection of Beam and Yorkmont. Taking S. Tryon to Beam would be out of the way if I'm remembering correctly.

West Blvd. is a dangerous area of town. It is generally OK during daylight, but as carolina_guy said, leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you at stop lights and stop signs (for an escape route). AND, make sure your doors are locked, and windows closed. There are other areas of town like this, for example Sunset and Beatties Ford Road. I avoid West Blvd at night, and am very watchful of adjacent areas (like when at restaurants on Bland Street near the Rail Line). If someone approaches your car, or stands in front of you (as has happened to me), "put it in LOW and GO". The rat that tried to stop me got out of the way quickly.

Is the South End even a safe place for two young females to live? Specifically near the area Camden - South End is located. Would it be safe for us to go out somewhere within walking distance at night?

We want to live in the city but maybe we are choosing the wrong area.

kj,

here is a website that will be very beneficial for you when determining if gun ownership is right for you. It's geared towards women but has great information for anyone considering: Cornered Cat

Bump please

I just initiated the rental process, not sure if I'm going to need to fear for my safety or not.
