Good morning,

My husband is retiring from the Navy next year and we are considering leaving the Virginia Beach area. We are looking for a good high school (ours in Chesapeake is ranked a #9 on greatschools.org) and somewhere we can go boating, good restaurants, etc. He will be looking for a job either in mechanical/nuclear engineering or project management (although nuclear engineer can be super stressful. so I'm not sure he wants to go that route).

I've looked at both Lake Norman and Jordan Lake in the Research Triangle area, but both might stretch our $500K housing budget to be in a good school district and near the water.

Any advice you have is much appreciated!

Are you looking to be right on the water for $500k or just close enough to drop your boat in or be close to the marina slip?

There should be plenty of off the water homes that are very nice near the lakes for $500k. On Lake Norman, look at Mooresville (water front side attends Lake Norman High, 8/10 on greatschools) and Cornelius and Davidson (attends William Amos Hough High, 10/10 on greatschools).

Down on Lake Wylie, you should check out Tega Cay, SC (attends Fort Mill High, 8/10 on greatschools).

I live in Raleigh but visit Charlotte often. If you are interested in a nuclear engineering position, Charlotte would be better. Duke Energy is based in Charlotte and McGuire and Catawba Nuclear Stations are nearby. Plus EPRI, AREVA, Westinghouse and URS have offices in the area.

Thanks so much! We'd love a neighborhood attached to the lake, if possible. The nuke possibilities also sound better in Charlotte. I wonder which area has more to do? I love downtown Charlotte, but as far as the area goes, I wonder if it's just as conservative as the rest of the state. We are middle of the road to leaning left.

Mecklenburg County was 62% for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. The county board is dominated by Democrats. You will find plenty of company and many liberals. The surrounding counties are majority Republican. Life in NC is being used to living in a purple state.

Ha thanks so much. I consider myself an independent, but being military here means the TVs on base are turned to Fox news 24/7 (the other channels are just as annoying, so now I just watch trashy TV
