I recently learned some disturbing information about all the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations in North Carolina. Specifically, I am worried about it leaching into the water, polluting the air. We were thinking of moving to Union County, but 5 waste lagoons and an estimated 20.5 million wet waste output (gal/year) put me off on moving there. Can anyone shed some light on these farms? I know they crowd hundreds to thousands of animals in small enclosed outbuildings, so they may not be easily seen, but I am assuming one could smell them, especially pigs! Is this common knowledge for residents?

Thanks in advance!!

Here is a link to an interactive map that goes by county in N.C.

There are chicken houses all over Union County. Hardly a secret.

At least you're learning about it now rather than showing up and demanding several multimillion dollar business move so as to not offend your delicate sensibilities. I don't mean you in the specific sense. There have been plenty of people who move here and want everything they don't like to move away.

So, on this map, you can query by zip code to see if/what CAFO's are in the area....I'd use it to choose an area where no upsteam pollution could affect my chosen location.

Looks like just something else to keep you up at night if you let it.

Me? Couldn't be bothered.
