I wouldn't want to live next to one of their plants but unless you do that you should be fine. I've not read of any polluted ground water from the Duke debacle beyond folks nearby their power plants.
What areas are near the plant? They mentioned ppl in Salisbury were affected
Interesting, not sure how Salisbury would have been impacted, first I've heard of it. The Yadkin river feeds into their local lake (High Rock) and as far as I know there are no power plants on the Yadkin north of Salisbury. The Dan River is where the big spill of coal ash was and I've read reports of ground water contamination near (like really close by) other power plants.
The issue is a small area around the Duke plant called Dukeville (area is off Long Ferry Road). About 80 homes have been affected. There are plans being made to pipe water to those homes from a large water tank which serves East Spencer, can be seen at Exit 81 of I-85. Large part of piping to be paid for by Duke. The issue comes down to size of the feed line and is being worked out, slowly. At this time Duke is paying for bottled water deliveries to the homes.
The issue is one which Duke would like to raise rates to cover its costs. Duke has made huge profits and when it was cheap to use coal did not protect the environment around the plant. The costs should come from current profits to remind large Corporations to act as good neighbors.
