Are charter schools common or a “thing” in North Carolina and more specifically in the Charlotte area? I hope that question makes sense. We live in TN now and they just aren’t that common and the few here aren’t that good. But we came from MI where they were more common and were very very good schools (at least most of them). We’re looking at a possible move to the Charlotte area and am curious about this. We have a child going into the 5th grade but would most likely be going into 6th grade by the time we all moved there. She currently attends a private school now due to not having a good public/charter school near us. We like private but she went to a charter school in MI before we left and we loved it. Felt like a private school but without the tuition (along with other things of course).
Can anyone recommend good charter schools in the Charlotte area I could start scoping out? What’s a good site to see test scores, grade for the school, etc.?
Charlotte Lab School is a new charter school I know is not on the list. Metrolina Regional Scholar's Academy is one of the most well known and has outstanding test scores. You will find it towards the top of most charter school rankings in NC.
Charter schools are not as common in NC as some states, hence only 31 options. Schools are by county in North Carolina (in general, some exceptions). Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools does operate several magnet schools, so you have traditional schools, magnet schools (such as a Montessori school, IB school, language immersion schools, etc...), and charter school options in most areas. The surrounding counties also have magnets, but less so than CMS since they are smaller.
The South Carolina side of the border has two charter schools in the Rock Hill area.
There are some very good charters in the Charlotte area. It just depends on where you want to live and where the jobs are located. Community School of Davidson and Lake Norman Charter are two that are highly rated. There's also Carolina International School and Corvian. I will say that there are also some very good public schools in the Charlotte area as well. My child attended a charter school for a year and then went back to public. I didn't see a difference between the two schools.
Do you know if Corvian, Community School of Davidson, and Lake Norman Charter are hard to get in? I know it's probably a lottery system but is there a long wait list for that?

Community School of Davidson and LKN Charter are hard to get into. I've heard people say that the time to get into CSOD is in Kindergarten. When my son was going into K, a preK classmate of his was lucky enough to get a spot. There were only a few spots that year. LKN is 5th-12th.
I know a few people at Corvian though I'm not sure how hard it is to get a spot. The kids I know all had older siblings already attending so when they started they got in through the sibling rule.
