Hello,

I am pursuing an opportunity in Ballantyne. I would be relocating to NC, and would like recommendations on towns that are within 45 minutes commute, 8+ rated high schools, family safe town, house cost not greater than $350K, good place to raise a family. Additionally, other than NC in-state college tuition rates, what are the advantages of living in NC vs. SC or SC vs. NC. Any other town profile information would be appreciated. Any other information regarding local school redistricting. Thank you.

Check out Union County, NC: Waxhaw, Indian Trail, Matthews, Monroe.
SC: Indian Land, Ft Mill, Walnut Creek is good for families in that budget with family amenities.

You could also just live in Ballantyne itself. Schools are highly rated. I echo the above poster's recommendations as well.

You should live in Charlotte off Providence Road/Sardis/Randolph. Plenty of neighborhoods closer to town. Schools are just as good. Close reverse commute to Ballantyne. Closer to entertainment the rest of the city has to offer.

Matthews isn't in Union County, it's in Mecklenburg although still a nice town (homes in Stallings may have a Matthews address though).

OP - I'd start with Ballantyne itself if you can find something you like in your price range as it has everything you listed. South Charlotte is also a good suggestion.

In-state college tuition and the possibility for a shorter commute are the main advantages to living in NC, although if working in Ballantyne you can have a short commute from parts of SC such as Fort Mill or Indian Land. Some would argue that taxes are much less in SC but I don't think it's that significant. Property taxes will vary by county.

In regards to redistricting, this is a very fast growing area so that is going to be a possibility in any part of town really. Several threads on here about redistricting in Mecklenburg and Union County (there may be some on the York and Lancaster SC forum but not sure). That may be the main advantage to SC - while redistricting is still a possibility, CMS and UCPS are county-wide districts so technically there is a chance you could be sent to a lesser performing school a little further away. There aren't as many schools in Fort Mill's district for example so even if you are redistricted it should be to another pretty highly rated school.

I think I heard that Fort Mill has to add some schools. How that will be handled will depend of the school board. When Gaston County added Stuart Cramer HS they didn't pull kids from South Point & Forest View, they started with the freshman class only. However, that school was built to prevent overcrowding.

Fort Mill is scheduled to open its third high school in August 2019- called Catawba Ridge High School. There will be a new middle school opening this fall, on Pleasant Road. All the school here are equally good. We moved here so that our kids would not be re-districted. Generally happy with the schools but do find the Carolinas in general do not fund their public schools adequately. Agree that NC has more public college choices.

Won't 1/3rd of Fort Mill be reassigned to the new high school once complete and boundaries re-drawn in 2018?

Most likely the southern half of Nation Ford High boundaries gets re-assigned to Catawba Ridge. To relieve Fort Mill High, some of the neighborhoods along 460 to the west of 77 could be re-assigned to Nation Ford High. Thus all the schools would even out.

That does not sound fun. Lots of growth down in Fort Mill. It is hard for the school districts to build as fast as the Charlotte region is growing.
