Good Morning. I am starting to do some research on moving to NC. I am a life-long Chicagoan but would like to move to escape our winters and be by mountains/nature.
I am single, mid-50s, no children (so schools are not important to me). I will be renting my condo in Chicago and looking for a nice 1 BR apartment.
I will definitely need to get a job (project manager) and will want one before I relocate.
I went to Raleigh this spring to check it out and liked it but it seemed pretty spread out.
I want to come to Charlotte in the fall to check it out. These are things I want to look for:
Neighborhood/Town that is more urban that rural. Walkable/bikeable to shopping.
Being able to come home from work and hop on a bike to a trail without being in traffic
Close to transportation into the city
Area that has people my age (50s). Leaving a area full of 20-30's and looking to meet more people my age.
Thanks in advance for any ideas to help my research!

Charlotte, like Raleigh, is a giant suburb surrounding a small urban core. Charlotte's urban core is larger and far more developed than Raleigh's however. Uptown (as Charlotte's center core is called) and South End more or less meet your requirements, although you may be disappointed with how small they seem and south end especially is full of 20 and 30 somethings. The Dilworth and NODA neighborhoods may also be a possibility.
A 1 br in these neighborhoods will probably cost $1,200 to $1,500 per month.
If your budget allows it, I'd recommend Dilworth or Elizabeth. Close in neighborhoods to all the urban amenities, but will have more people your age out and about. SouthEnd is packed full of people between 21 and 35, and while there are people older than that in the neighborhood as well, it wouldn't be unusual to live on a floor where nobody is over 40.
Twenty years ago the core was fairly small and not so lively. Today it is much larger and thriving. I would suggest Dilworth, Southend, Myers Park, or Selwin. Consider these but take enough time to explore and see what you like. There are options. You might like uptown as an option. Riding the "rail trail" can be a nice experience. In regards to transportation, buses cover most of the city and light rail covers a east-west line. But like most cities under 4 or 5 million, cars are still the preferred method of transportation.
I’m a Chicagoan currently visiting Charlotte to relocate here, and staying Uptown all week! We’re looking for a SFH and we’d prefer urban-walkable but our budget won’t allow both so we’ll end up in a suburb. But you can find a great urban-walkable 1BR downtown with a decent budget.
Hi Midpack: Thank you! After your visit, if you can, let me know what you think of Charlotte. Would love a Chicagoan's point of view.
Good luck!
