My family May be moving to Charlotte area next summer and trying to get a feel for what schools would be a good fit for sophomore and 4th grader next school Year. That said, do any of the districts offer tours to prospective families or offer a shadow day for kids? I know private schools probably offer this but wanted to look at public first.
From a public school perspective, what specifically would the tour give you to make/break your decision? If it's just about getting the kids comfortable with the school they'll be attending, most schools have an initiation tour a few days before the school year begins for new students.
There are a ton of schools that are highly rated in the area. If you're just looking at basic public schools (non-Charter), the first thing I'd recommend is knowing where you'll be working first...that'll determine what area of Charlotte to look into (North/South/East/West), since it can be over an hour from one end of the county to the other at rush hour. Each area has good/bad schools, so it'll help narrow down your focus if you can hone in on an area that minimizes commute times for you.
For CMS, it is up to each principal. Some schools will arrange a tour by request and others won't. Some schools will only arrange a tour for families that already bought a house. With the amount of people moving to Charlotte, it can be a distraction to educating the current students when you have prospective families asking for tours all the time while they house shop.
I will say it seems like schools that are eager for more highly involved families to boost test scores are more eager to give tours than schools that already have high test scores.
Hi, look at websites like greatschools.org or schooldigger.com. You can also google NC School report cards. As they say, some schools do tours but it has become more difficult to come in and ask for a tour. Also it all depends on where you live so I would check the websites and narrow down your search area.
