Most large cities downtown cities aren't designed for that. I lived on Capitol Hill in DC for 2 years and the only thing really walkable near me was a grocery store (and I usually drove there). Much like Charlotte, you really have to be in certain neighborhoods or parts of the city to do those things.

DC is very urban but walking to shop or a movie theater isn't realistic from the majority of the city or most places. Movie theaters and grocery stores aren't plopped down every 5th or10th block...that's just not reality or possible in any city.

I mean living in Crystal City, Alexandria, etc can provide many of the amenities you talk about. Uptown Charlotte or any downtown will have limited walkability other than work environments and touristy activities. It's about the neighborhoods near uptown and around the light rail and other parts of the city that will cater to urban enthusiast.

Uptown has limited walkability? I think it has great walkability. Most large cities have sidewalks and the ability to walk to shops. Neighborhoods close to Uptown also have it as well. Some of the areas a little further from Uptown are terrible though.

You must have lived in a very remote part of Capitol Hill to not be within walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, etc.

And yes, Uptown Charlotte is very walkable.

yeah, I'm not understanding this logic. I have no problem walking all over Uptown. The only problem is construction in a few areas that block sidewalks from time to time.

DC is walkable in just about every part of the city.

It has been awhile since I've been in DC, but there are some parts where you really don't want to walk in.

I found that getting around in DC was easy without an automobile, almost as easy as getting around London.
