Much of Chicago is predominately white (north shore, etc.) Another the "burbs" for which you elude. It is the same in much of New York and New Jersey. When comparing, you should consider the ethnic make-up of the areas in which you are comparing. You should be talking about "city" and not the white burbs. Most people in this area send their children to private schools if they are concerned with the problems in their CMS school districting. Another issue is that city schools are evaluated on academic achievement based on ACT scores. Almost seventy percent of North Carolina students were included in the academic performance which was a huge percentage. In Illinois, only four percent were considered. They were likely hand chose from certain schools. So basically, the whole school ranking is relative. They also consider spending per classroom which we all know that New Jersey spends tons. That is a reason people are leaving. You have possibly mixed apples and oranges. Not impressed by what I have seen coming out of Chicago or Illinois in the past decade.
But, that is my opinion and everyone should have their own perceptions based on hands-on experience. I lived in Schaumburg, Ill. A perfect example of a Chicago burb with good schools probably the equivalent of Ballantyne area. But, Schaumburg wasn't typical of the city of Chicago.
Nice summary of Chicago and burbs.
Schaumburg is a great place offcourse with tons of shopping choices and great schools(private options as well).
Do you feel Charlotte (specifically blue ribbon) schools are comparable to Glenview/Schaumburg/Naperville schools ?
Thanks,
When you are in the Deep South. I agree with Sweetbottoms, and I have been here x 32 yrs...Charlotte IS in the Deep South in every way, shape and form! It's as RED a state as Alabama is and has the same "good old boy' politics and mentality....and THAT is with is being BETTER now than it was 32 yrs ago...but not much. And, YES! I'm a Florida transplant, too. I 'escaped' the Cocaine Cowboys years and dealt with the good old boys so I could peacefully raise a son in a less drug filled environment.

Obama won NC in 2008.
Yes, there are a lot of churches and people that are very religious in the area, but IMO people don't really push their religion on anyone unless specifically asked about it. Noticed Sweetbottoms only commented on things like the number of bumper stickers, not actually people trying to get them to join their church or something.

Thanks,
South Charlotte, Ballantyne, and some areas have really good schools as well as places like Ft. Mill, Concord, Cornelius, Mooresville, etc. but the best way to check it out would be to look up high performing schools in the area on the internet. There are tons of private schools. Check out private schools in the area via internet. Good luck but just be sure you do enough research,

This is about the most distorted, inaccurate assessment of the city I have ever read. I moved here from Florida and Charlotte is much more progressive than any place there except maybe Miami and Key West. Glad you "escaped the cocaine cowboys." It seems as if you were riding with them for a long time. Where are the "good old (should be 'ole') boys? And, in case you didn't know, it is only a drug filed environment if you are a user and chose that small group to associate with. All info you gave is prejudicial and bogus. Besides, I wish Charlotte was more "deep south" like in nature. It would be more 'real' and not so infected with the liberalism and intolerance brought in from outside. Could you be an example of that?

Again, if the number of churches in a town determined being in the deep South, the town that my sister lives in, in South Jersey would be the deep South. For that matter, the town in Michigan where my mother was born & raised would also be the deep South.
For that matter, NC is about as red as Pennsylvania.

I agree with you. I don't understand the intolerance of some. So what, there are lots of churches. There are lots of churches in most cities all over the world and all over the U.S. So what? I am not a religious person, but I respect anyone that wishes to go to church, a bar, a race, or whatever. I find it incredibly ignorant that anyone would be offended or bothered that there are churches. I spend lots of time in Boston. There are as many churches there as here. I prefer a red state and I am sad to see N.C. become so contaminated with blue. Those guilty of calling southerners intolerant, racist rednecks should look in the mirror. They are the intolerant, racists. I find Charlotte and other places I travel in the south wonderful with friendly, genuine, accepting people. Not quite as friendly as they used to be with the outside influence, but still friendlier than elsewhere. God bless church goers and God bless non believers. May they all be allowed to just live their lives without idiots that get offended by too many churches.

As a state, NC has become more & more like Pennsylvania, mostly red with large blotches of blue, with a few small patches of blue. Comparing NC to Alabama, politically, is not even close.

You are right. I am well familiar with Pa. You even have different worlds in Pa. I spent time in Carlisle. Carlisle is as different in all aspects from Philadelphia as North Carolina and Alabama. Pittsburgh and Philly are two different worlds also as you know. We must be tolerant and forgive ignorant people that have been brainwashed and are unwilling to adapt. I believe it was Jesus or Winston Churchill or somebody like that that said, "forgive them, they know not what they say."

Both states have much in common, historically. As the NC Piedmont has urbanized, the Commonwealth & state have become more similar, with urban vs rural battles in their legislatures. If someone comes from Florida they can't possibly be aware of that, but to draw a comparison of NC to Alabama is a head scratcher.
