I can't believe I didn't think of this, lol. My brother has some great acreage to the west of Lake Wylie. It's gorgeous and the taxes are low. They absolutely love the area. Thanks for bringing up Lake Wylie.
IMO the west side of Lake Norman is almost worse (unless you go further north up 16), because the farms are being turned into new construction homes right now. On the East side at least that’s mostly already happened.

That's all I needed to hear.. Exactly what I'm trying to escape. But I do appreciate the suggestion.

Thanks, but that looks dangerously close to Charlotte, which I hear is exploding with growth these days. I'm guessing the area is maybe 5 years behind where I am now in urban sprawl

As I suggested on the western NC board, look into Surry, Wilkes and Alexander Counties. Lake Hickory and Kerr Scott reservoir are in the area. Lots of small towns and wide open spaces. Beautiful foothills scenery.

Look around Moss Lake aka the Kings Mountain reservoir. Kings Mountain is at the intersection of I 85 & US 74. The lake is NW of the city.

Checked out Kings Mountain, it is warm, but the crime stats were kind of disappointing. Also, once you get that close to major highways, growth or sprawl becomes inevitable.
