Hello,
We want to be closer to the University area(UNC Charlotte),so we basically narrowed down to Harrisburg or Concord NC. Could the residents of these area, give us an overview of how these suburbs are?
1. Is Harrisburg more prone to crime, because of its proximity to the university?
2. How is the retail stores situation in these suburbs?
DH works in University Executive park & DS might end up attending UNC Charlotte in the next couple of years. Any info/advice would be quite helpful. Thank u...

Why would being close to the university result in more crime? Are you suggesting the university students are criminals?

Well some parts of the University area do tend to have a little higher crime rates, but that's moreso south/west of WT Harris so I'd still probably say no to question #1. Many seem to think the new light rail extension will improve some of the areas along it.

#2 depends on where you are. Both Harrisburg and Concord are kinda spread out. The downtown Harrisburg area has your basics - grocery, restaurants, etc, but you'd likely have to go to the Concord Mills or University area for more choices. However some of "Harrisburg" such as all the neighborhoods along Rocky River Rd. are a little further away.

Concord is also pretty big, with the Concord Mills area being the closest to UNCC (and uptown), having the most shopping and the most in-demand schools of Concord. But there is also shopping as you go further north in Concord particularly off of I-85.

I also wouldn't rule out some of the University area itself in Charlotte such as the Mallard Creek/Highland Creek area.

We currently live in Harrisburg. There is very little crime and we have great response times from the county sheriffs when needed. Both areas have good schools, although Harrisburg probably has a slight edge. The real estate in Harrisburg is more expensive. If you opt for Harrisburg, stay east of 49.
