ok, I guess I should add that we are looking for rural and not looking to be a subdivision. We have a camper, a boat and a huge dog...we aren't really HOA friendly.

What about the areas east of Salisbury?

That helps.. Then I would check outside of Mooresville and Lexington. Rural could be anything in between though. And even though you have those things, just outside of the major subs in Charlotte, you could have those things.

We are hoping to find something on at least 5 acres. Ideally, I would like to find land, build my dream house and possibly a small hobby farm.

I see some homes on larger properties in Mocksville. Anyone familiar with that area?

Well, I don't know much about farm land, so I guess I am out of the discussion. Good Luck though.

From personal experience, I would recommend Concord (as far as exit 49 - which is literally right next to CHarlotte city limits). I commuted from right off of exit 49 to the Food Lion headquarters in Salisbury. The commute time varied, typically the morning was better than the afternoon. I would leave my apt at 7:25 and be at my desk at 8:00 (5 minute window). On the other hand, coming home took from 35 minutes to an hour. Monday through Thursday was usually a breeze and the drive is easy but Friday afternoons are a different story.

I personally would rather live within 15 minutes of my residence and live in Charlotte, that's why I left my job in Salisbury. HOWEVER, now I work in Charlotte and my commute ranges from 45minutes to an hour. It really bites. I kinda miss my old commute *sigh*

I commute from Cornelius to a small town near Salisbury. 45 minutes is very optimistic, even from Huntersville. Mooresville is really the furthest to the west. Concord is the furthest going South. Albemarle, too. Someone i work with comes from Albemarle and has a shorter commute than I go. Statesville, from some parts, are only 45 minutes. Inside of Rowan County, Faith is the best elementary school. Morgan, Enochville, Cleveland, Mt Ulla and Bostian are all pretty good.

To the north is Lexington. I am not a fan (just as I am not a fan of Salisbury).

Ideally, Cabarrus county is probably your best bet.

There is still plenty of rural area in Rowan County. The county that Salisbury is located.

Also Tyro and Linwood are rural areas in South west part of Davidson County and it would be about 30 minute commute give or take.

Gold Hill, Rockwell, Granite Quarry are of the most rural places you will find in the area. Finding something out there with a few acres shouldn't be all that difficult.

Be ware that there isn't anything there, and you'll find yourself all the way to Salsibury for most anything, and then to Concord/Charlotte when you do not find what you want there.

The commute from any of those towns would be easy, as would a commute from Kannapolis, north Concord, Mt Pleasant, and even Albemarle... 52 isn't horrible.

I would certainly not want to drive on 73. Only consider Mooresville if you are in the extreme east end. 150 becomes a gridlock after crossing 115 going west.

801 and 150 between Mooresville and Salisbury certainly may have what you are looking for as well. There are a few developments but still pracially completely rural.

For the most part, certainly avoid Spencer.

I concur. My sister lives in Granite Quarry, and while she lives in a nice little area with a decent piece of land, she's absolutely miserable about having to go WAY out of the way for anything other than groceries. (She's from NJ, so "rural living" is pretty foreign to her!)

But if that's your cup of tea, enjoy!

I am in NJ too and up until about 3 years ago, everything aside from groceries and a few local Mom and Pop type stores was 1/2 hr away. Developers have gone crazy and we now have a 15 minute drive to the grocery store, Home Depot, Lowes, Kohl's, Walmart and a few major restaurants. Major malls are still 20 minutes to 1/2 hr away though. I could stand to be a little farther out, but not a ton. The convenience of the stores of course brought the traffic, noise etc.

LOL! Had a friend that lived in Morris Cty, NJ literally across the street from a major mall, a grocery store, Home Depot...everything you could imagine was within a five minute drive... she moved to a corn field in Illinois where even groceries were 20 minutes away. Needless to say... she was miserable. She lasted 3 years and they moved.
